In the 15 years I have sold Sun Tunnels, I have been asked this question more than once, so
it’s not new to me.
Lately, however, I’ve been a bit dismayed to read in some internet articles that climbing through a Sun Tunnel just might be possible.
So, I’d like to take a moment to relay why homeowners should not be concerned that burglars will
access their homes via a Velux Sun Tunnel.
In a nutshell:
1) Sun Tunnel domes are securely attached to the roof…removing one would take a power
tool. They are extremely impact resistant.
2) Even if that were accomplished, Sun Tunnel rigid tubes are either 10″ or 14″ in diameter, far too small for a person to enter.
3) Sun Tunnel flex tubes are 22″….however, being flexible, a person could not successfully
“slide” down inside. The tube would collapse, leaving the person somewhere in the attic.
4) Unless your burglar is starring on “World’s Dumbest Criminals” he/she would realize
that window or door entry would be the way to go. After all, while entry through a Sun Tunnel
would be extremely difficult, consider the impossible logistics of using it as the exit !
I certainly hope that I did not insult your intelligence with this topic. I am simply trying to
dispel a myth that I’ve been asked about and continue to read about online.
As always, I would be glad to discuss skylights with you!
