Skylight flashing:Why NOT make your own?

The desirability of a high quality skylight is obvious, but many people don’t know that they should pay as much attention to the quality of the skylight flashing that is used.

This photo is of flashing that was made on site, by cutting a sheet of metal and using an adhesive or nails to position it around the skylight.

Regardless of the quality of the skylight, when an installer creates his own flashing, this is often the reason a skylight begins to leak.  My best guess is that installers make their own flashing to save money.  What they do not realize is that the savings is minimal, once you factor in the time and the potential for future trouble.

Velux makes a variety of flashing kits to be used with the wide range of skylights we offer. VELUX flashing systems are designed to shed water without relying on sealants that can break down over time. We offer a variety of flashing systems to ensure a weathertight fit for virtually all roof types and slopes.

Velux flashings provide seamless corners and a uniform look (see below).
They also come with an adhesive underlayment and we use professional shielding agents as an extra barrier of protection.

Most importantly, Velux offers the best warranty in the industry, however, their “No Leak” warranty is only good when a skylight is installed with the appropriate Velux flashing.

Homeowners, be sure when you compare installers, you ask about the skylight flashing. In the long run, you will be glad you did.   Roofers, when you rely on Midwest Skylight for your product needs, you will benefit from all of our flashing knowledge.
