Have you heard the term “storm chaser” in reference to a roofing contractor? As resident of Kansas, we are all too familiar with the severe storm damage we frequently get here, but did you know that, like all other Midwestern states, the occurrence of “storm chasers” (roofing contractors who are migratory, following the storm damage) has been a significant problem in Kansas.
To protect Kansas homeowners and reputable Kansas roofing (and skylight) contractors alike, in 2013 the Kansas Legislature enacted the Kansas Roofing Registration Act. Under the provisions of this law, every “roofing contractor” must obtain a roofing contractor registration certificate from the Kansas Attorney General in order to legally provide commercial or residential roofing services for a fee in Kansas.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO CHECK YOUR CONTRACTOR’S CERTIFICATE?
1) This certificate proves that your contractor has liability insurance, worker’s compensation insurance, and is current on business taxes due to Kansas (evidence of a sound business).
2) This certificate is evidence that your contractor has established a reputable business in Kansas and can provide reassurance that he/she will be available for follow-up or warranty work, if needed.
3) If your contractor breaks any of the ‘rules’ of the registration….like taking money for a job and not completing it, the contractor’s certificate can be suspended and possibly revoked.
4) The certificate must be renewed annually, additional evidence that you are dealing with a business who is reputable and has a history of responsible business practices.
NOT SURE YOUR CONTRACTOR HAS A KANSAS CERTIFICATE? Here is the list from the Kansas Attorney General:
